Just a few weeks ago gaia had to stop development because their reverse engineering of the Google Earth protocol violated some licenses of Googles data providers.
When I did my daily portage sync (package database update for those that don’t play Gentoo) I realised that gaia was back in the tree. A quick glance at the gaia project page show that they are continuing development as “gaia-clean” and without support for google imagery.
